What Is The Posthumous Investigation?

The Posthumous Investigation is a literary noir point-and-click mystery developed by Mother Gaia Studio (Brazil). Set in 1937 Rio de Janeiro, you play as a detective hired by the recently deceased Brás Cubas — a wealthy socialite who wants you to uncover who murdered him. The catch: you have only one day, and when you fail, time resets.

Inspired by the Brazilian literary classic Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas by Machado de Assis, the game weaves dark comedy, social satire, and genuine detective work into a puzzle that demands careful observation across multiple loops. There are no hints, no hand-holding, and no way to fast-forward past the consequences of your choices.

With 14 suspects, a hand-crafted Thinking Board for connecting evidence, and a cast that grows more morally complex every loop, this is one of the most ambitious mystery games of 2026. Upon release it earned 97% positive reviews on Steam.

⚡ Quick Tips for New Detectives

New to The Posthumous Investigation? These core tips will save you from wasted loops:

Observation First, Action Second

Your first loop should be pure reconnaissance. Don't try to prevent anything — just follow suspects, note their schedules, and identify all interactable objects. Every subsequent loop benefits from this groundwork.

The Thinking Board Is Your Primary Tool

Don't treat the Thinking Board as optional. Every clue you collect must be manually pinned and connected. The game will not tell you when you have enough — only a complete, logical chain leads to a valid accusation.

Time Is Finite — Plan Your Route

You have 24 in-game hours. Traveling between locations costs time. Prioritize suspects who appear in multiple scenes and route yourself to observe them at different times before committing to a conversation.

Dialogue Unlocks Are Cumulative

New conversation branches open based on knowledge from previous loops, not just the current one. If a suspect won't talk about something yet, try completing a different thread first — it may unlock new questioning options.

Everyone Has a Motive

The game's literary foundation means no character is innocent. Even seemingly minor figures have secrets. Read every document, eavesdrop on every side conversation, and treat every interaction as potential evidence.

Reset Without Fear

A failed loop is never truly wasted. Any new information you discover — names, alibis, contradictions — is retained in your memory even after the reset. Treat each loop as an investment in future ones.
