Investigation note: Character schedule times are fixed and deterministic. The schedules listed below are accurate for every loop โ€” use them for route planning. Dialogue content, however, varies based on your accumulated knowledge state.

๐Ÿ‘ฅ All 14 Characters โ€” Quick Reference

๐Ÿ“‹ Full Character Profiles

๐Ÿ‘ป

Brรกs Cubas

Your Client (The Victim) ๐Ÿ’€ Deceased

The murdered man. Wealthy, sardonic, and โ€” even in death โ€” unreliable. He hired you to solve his own murder, but his ghost withholds information strategically. He is the lens through which the game's literary satire operates.

Present at your starting location throughout the day as a ghost. Available for dialogue at any time, though his responses deepen significantly with loop knowledge.

N/A โ€” he is the victim. However, his own shady history makes several other characters' motives comprehensible.

Exhaust his dialogue at maximum loop count to unlock the Machado de Assis Easter egg branches and gain the clearest picture of his relationships with the 14 suspects.

Never ignore the ghost's dialogue. Return after every major discovery โ€” Brรกs Cubas updates his responses based on your accumulated knowledge.

๐Ÿ’ผ

Marie Grant

Secretary / Close Confidante ๐Ÿ” Suspect

Personal secretary and confidante to Brรกs Cubas. She has unparalleled access to the victim's private affairs, finances, and correspondence. Her loyalty is a central ambiguity.

07:30 โ€“ Study entrance. 10:00 โ€“ Leaves study (creates the 10:00+ access window). 12:00 โ€“ Cafรฉ. 15:00 โ€“ Garden. 18:30 โ€“ Returns to main house.

Financial โ€” she is named in a contested will provision. The document in the study (accessible after 10:00) establishes her motive directly.

Full dialogue tree requires morning, midday, and evening visits with maximum knowledge. The Benevolent achievement requires exhausting her entire tree in one loop.

Her 10:00 departure from the study is not accidental. Follow her after she leaves โ€” her midday destination reveals an important relationship.

๐ŸŽฉ

Thomas Whitfield

Business Partner ๐Ÿ” Suspect

Long-standing business partner of Brรกs Cubas. Their partnership has been under severe strain due to a disputed financial arrangement discovered in Loop 5's study document.

08:00 โ€“ Main house entrance hall. 11:00 โ€“ Port District (daytime). 13:00 โ€“ Cafรฉ. 16:00 โ€“ Returns to main house. 20:00 โ€“ Departs (not accessible after 20:00).

Financial + personal โ€” the will dispute affects him directly and he has independent financial debts tied to the partnership.

Confronting him with the study financial document opens his second dialogue tier. His 20:00 departure creates urgency โ€” miss him before 20:00 or lose the loop's window.

Thomas's Port District presence (11:00 daytime) is different from the evening port content. Both are relevant but contain different evidence.

๐ŸŒน

Dona Eulรกlia

Widow / Neighbour ๐Ÿ” Suspect

Socially prominent widow who lives adjacent to the Cubas estate. She maintained a complex personal relationship with the victim spanning many years โ€” the nature of which becomes clearer in later loops.

07:00 โ€“ Garden (dawn window ONLY until 07:45). 09:30 โ€“ Parlour. 12:30 โ€“ Cafรฉ. 15:30 โ€“ Garden again. 19:00 โ€“ Retires for the evening.

Personal โ€” a years-long secret documented in the victim's private papers. Her early-morning garden monologue (07:00โ€“07:45) contains critical testimony for the Opportunity chain.

The dawn garden monologue is the only way to get her most candid testimony. Daytime conversations are guarded; she is a different character before 08:00.

She is the 'rambling character' of the dawn garden. Do not interrupt โ€” the full monologue contains three separate evidence-quality statements.

โš•๏ธ

Dr. Virgรญlio Damasceno

Family Physician ๐Ÿ” Suspect

Long-serving family doctor to the Cubas household. His medical access creates an obvious Means chain entry point, but his alibi appears solid on first inspection.

08:30 โ€“ Medical office (accessible location). 11:30 โ€“ House call to Cubas estate. 13:30 โ€“ Lunch at cafรฉ. 17:00 โ€“ Returns to office. 20:30 โ€“ Home.

Professional disgrace โ€” a prior incident connected to his medical practice was covered up by Brรกs Cubas, creating both debt and resentment.

His medical records dialogue branch (accessible after finding the study document) directly relates to the Means chain. His alibi is undermined by the dawn garden testimony.

His 11:30 house call overlaps with the murder window. Cross-referencing his account of that visit against two other characters' testimonies produces the alibi contradiction.

๐Ÿƒ

Sebastiรฃo Monteiro

Estranged Nephew ๐Ÿ” Suspect

The victim's estranged nephew, cut from the will years prior. He arrived in Rio shortly before the murder โ€” his timing alone makes him an obvious suspect, which is exactly what the game wants you to think.

10:00 โ€“ Port District arrival (appears mid-morning). 12:00 โ€“ Wandering between locations. 14:00 โ€“ Cafรฉ. 17:00 โ€“ Back at port. 21:00 โ€“ Unknown.

Inheritance โ€” the most obvious motive in the game. His surface-level evidence is plentiful, which makes him the game's primary red herring.

His second-tier dialogue (unlocked after knowing about the will document) reveals that his relationship with the murder is more complex than initial appearances suggest.

He is a deliberate red herring. Do not build your main accusation around him without completing the full cross-reference. His strong surface motive collapses under thorough investigation.

๐Ÿ—๏ธ

Constรขncia Leite

Housekeeper ๐Ÿ” Suspect

Long-serving housekeeper who knows every room, routine, and secret in the Cubas household. Her loyalty was absolute โ€” until recently.

07:00 โ€“ Main house interior (all morning). 12:00 โ€“ Kitchen. 14:00 โ€“ Garden. 16:30 โ€“ Back inside. 19:00 โ€“ Evening rounds of the house.

Loyalty betrayed โ€” she witnessed something she was never meant to see, and has been living with that knowledge. Her motive is emotional rather than financial.

Her kitchen dialogue (12:00) is the most candid window. Evening rounds (19:00) produce a unique testimony branch about the victim's last hours.

Her evening rounds pass through the study โ€” she is the indirect source of evidence about what happened in the study the previous night.

โœ๏ธ

Padre รlvaro Fonseca

Parish Priest ๐Ÿ” Suspect

Local parish priest with a long spiritual relationship with Brรกs Cubas โ€” and, more importantly, knowledge of confessions that could destroy multiple suspects' alibis.

07:00 โ€“ Church (accessible all morning). 11:00 โ€“ House call to Cubas estate. 14:00 โ€“ Back at church. 18:00 โ€“ Evening prayer. 20:00 โ€“ Unavailable.

Moral โ€” he is protecting a secret confessed to him. His complicity is passive rather than active, but it constitutes a direct obstruction of the investigation.

He will never directly contradict his confessional duty, but his refusals and deflections are themselves evidence. Track which topics he refuses across multiple loops.

His 11:00 house call is the same window as Dr. Virgรญlio's โ€” they cannot both be telling the truth about who was present. This is the Opportunity chain's key contradiction.

๐Ÿ˜ค

Henrique Moura

Political Associate / The Angry Small Man ๐Ÿ” Suspect

A minor political associate of the victim with an inflated sense of his own importance and a volcanic temper. His anger is easily provoked โ€” which is useful for the Black Eye achievement and for extracting unguarded information.

09:00 โ€“ Main house. 11:30 โ€“ Cafรฉ. 13:30 โ€“ Port area. 16:00 โ€“ Returns. 18:30 โ€“ Leaves property.

Political embarrassment โ€” Brรกs Cubas had material that could expose Henrique's corrupt dealings. His motive is self-preservation.

Aggressive dialogue options (available from Loop 1) trigger his unguarded responses. The Black Eye achievement requires the most aggressive option in his 09:00 morning window.

His angry outbursts, while entertaining, contain genuine information. Do not dismiss his rants as pure character texture โ€” they contain two separate testimony-quality statements.

๐ŸŽจ

Isabel Ferreira

Artist / Tenant ๐Ÿ” Suspect

A young artist renting a studio on the estate grounds. She observes everything and volunteers nothing. Her vantage point gives her unique sight-lines on events others claim not to have witnessed.

07:00 โ€“ Studio (all morning, do not disturb until she exits). 11:30 โ€“ Garden walk. 13:00 โ€“ Cafรฉ. 16:00 โ€“ Studio again. 21:00 โ€“ Evening walk (rare accessibility window).

Witness protection โ€” she saw something and has been threatened into silence. Her motive for concealment is fear, not guilt.

Her 21:00 evening walk is an extremely rare accessibility window where her fear drops and she becomes candid. This is the most information-dense conversation in the game if you reach her then.

She requires patient handling. Do not confront her with accusations โ€” her testimony is obtained through trust-building across multiple loops. She is the tertiary witness that validates the Opportunity chain.

๐ŸŽ–๏ธ

Coronel Barbosa

Military Retired / Old Family Friend ๐Ÿ” Suspect

A retired military officer and oldest friend of the Cubas family. His age grants him unusual candour โ€” he will tell you things others guard, but his memory is selective.

08:00 โ€“ Veranda (morning only, leaves by 10:30). 12:30 โ€“ Cafรฉ. 15:00 โ€“ Long afternoon rest (inaccessible). 18:00 โ€“ Returns for evening drinks.

He is covering for someone โ€” a person he has known for decades and whose guilt he suspects but cannot bring himself to report.

His veranda morning window (08:00โ€“10:30) is the best conversation window. His evening drinks (18:00) add a softer, more melancholy layer โ€” he knows more than he says.

He is not the murderer, but he holds the single most important corroborating testimony for the True Ending's secondary conspirator chain. Do not skip his evening window.

๐Ÿ’Ž

Leonora Vasconcelos

Socialite / Financial Beneficiary ๐Ÿ” Suspect

A glamorous socialite with a direct financial stake in the victim's estate through a disputed bequest. She presents a polished exterior that hides systematic deception.

10:00 โ€“ Main house (late arrival). 12:15 โ€“ Cafรฉ (present at the private meeting window). 14:30 โ€“ Garden. 17:00 โ€“ Main house. 21:30 โ€“ Departs entirely.

Financial โ€” her bequest is challenged by the same will provision that affects Marie Grant. Their financial interests are directly in competition.

She is one of the two participants in the 12:15โ€“12:45 cafรฉ private meeting. Her post-meeting dialogue (13:00+) is dramatically different from her pre-meeting composure.

The cafรฉ meeting reveals that she and Thomas Whitfield have a private arrangement that neither acknowledges publicly. This connection is central to the True Ending's extended Motive chain.

โš–๏ธ

Alberto Nunes

Lawyer / Estate Administrator ๐Ÿ” Suspect

The Cubas family lawyer who administered the contested will. He is the only character who fully understands the financial implications of the murder โ€” and the one with the most to gain from confusion.

09:00 โ€“ Legal office (off-estate, accessible location). 11:00 โ€“ Estate visit. 14:00 โ€“ Cafรฉ meeting (with specific character, not the 12:15 window). 17:30 โ€“ Office. 19:30 โ€“ Home.

Professional and financial โ€” as estate administrator, the will dispute's resolution direction dramatically affects his income. He has been steering the dispute deliberately.

His legal office dialogue (09:00) requires prior knowledge of the will document to access the second tier. His 14:00 cafรฉ meeting is with a character whose connection to him is the secondary conspirator revelation.

He is the secondary conspirator. His connection to Leonora Vasconcelos (revealed at the 14:00 cafรฉ meeting) is the backbone of the True Ending's additional Motive chain. Follow him from his 14:00 cafรฉ meeting.

๐Ÿ‘๏ธ

Zeferina

Kitchen Staff / Silent Observer ๐Ÿ” Suspect

A kitchen worker who moves invisibly through the household. She is universally underestimated by the other suspects โ€” and by many players โ€” which makes her the game's most reliable independent witness.

07:00 โ€“ Kitchen (all morning). 12:30 โ€“ Serving lunch at cafรฉ. 15:00 โ€“ Back at estate. 18:00 โ€“ Evening service. 21:00 โ€“ Departs.

None personal โ€” but she has witnessed events that directly contradict three suspects' alibis. Her testimony is the most credible in the game precisely because she has no stake in the outcome.

She will not volunteer information. Every testimony node from Zeferina requires a specific question prompt that is only unlocked after collecting the relevant contradiction from another character first.

She is the final verification source for the Opportunity chain's alibi contradiction. If your chain is rejected, she likely holds the missing corroborating testimony. Ask her about the 11:00โ€“12:00 window.

โ“ Characters FAQ

Who is the murderer in The Posthumous Investigation?

We deliberately avoid naming the murderer in the Characters guide to preserve the investigative experience. The murderer's identity is revealed through your Thinking Board construction. For the explicit answer with full evidence explanation, see the Endings Guide (spoiler warning applies).

Who is the secondary conspirator for the True Ending?

The secondary conspirator is Alberto Nunes, the family lawyer. His connection to Leonora Vasconcelos, revealed at the 14:00 cafรฉ meeting, forms the backbone of the True Ending's extended Motive chain. Full details in the Endings Guide.

Which character holds the critical alibi contradiction testimony?

Zeferina, the kitchen worker, provides the final corroborating testimony for the Opportunity chain's alibi contradiction. She will only volunteer this information when asked with the specific question prompt โ€” unlocked after finding the primary contradiction from another source first.

Is Sebastiรฃo Monteiro actually innocent?

His innocence relative to the murder is part of the investigation โ€” we won't confirm this here. What the guide can confirm is that he is the game's primary surface-level red herring, and that building your main accusation around him will result in a False Conviction ending, not the Standard or True Ending.

Do any characters have completely unique time windows that never recur?

Yes. Dona Eulรกlia's dawn garden monologue (07:00โ€“07:45) and Isabel Ferreira's evening walk (21:00) are the two most time-critical. Both are gone by the listed cutoff โ€” there is no way to access this content after the window closes in that loop.
