The murdered man. Wealthy, sardonic, and — even in death — unreliable. He hired you to solve his own murder, but his ghost withholds information strategically. He is the lens through which the game's literary satire operates.

Present at your starting location throughout the day as a ghost. Available for dialogue at any time, though his responses deepen significantly with loop knowledge.

N/A — he is the victim. However, his own shady history makes several other characters' motives comprehensible.

Exhaust his dialogue at maximum loop count to unlock the Machado de Assis Easter egg branches and gain the clearest picture of his relationships with the 14 suspects.

Personal secretary and confidante to Brás Cubas. She has unparalleled access to the victim's private affairs, finances, and correspondence. Her loyalty is a central ambiguity.

07:30 – Study entrance. 10:00 – Leaves study (creates the 10:00+ access window). 12:00 – Café. 15:00 – Garden. 18:30 – Returns to main house.

Financial — she is named in a contested will provision. The document in the study (accessible after 10:00) establishes her motive directly.

Full dialogue tree requires morning, midday, and evening visits with maximum knowledge. The Benevolent achievement requires exhausting her entire tree in one loop.

Long-standing business partner of Brás Cubas. Their partnership has been under severe strain due to a disputed financial arrangement discovered in Loop 5's study document.

08:00 – Main house entrance hall. 11:00 – Port District (daytime). 13:00 – Café. 16:00 – Returns to main house. 20:00 – Departs (not accessible after 20:00).

Financial + personal — the will dispute affects him directly and he has independent financial debts tied to the partnership.

Confronting him with the study financial document opens his second dialogue tier. His 20:00 departure creates urgency — miss him before 20:00 or lose the loop's window.

Socially prominent widow who lives adjacent to the Cubas estate. She maintained a complex personal relationship with the victim spanning many years — the nature of which becomes clearer in later loops.

07:00 – Garden (dawn window ONLY until 07:45). 09:30 – Parlour. 12:30 – Café. 15:30 – Garden again. 19:00 – Retires for the evening.

Personal — a years-long secret documented in the victim's private papers. Her early-morning garden monologue (07:00–07:45) contains critical testimony for the Opportunity chain.

The dawn garden monologue is the only way to get her most candid testimony. Daytime conversations are guarded; she is a different character before 08:00.

Long-serving family doctor to the Cubas household. His medical access creates an obvious Means chain entry point, but his alibi appears solid on first inspection.

08:30 – Medical office (accessible location). 11:30 – House call to Cubas estate. 13:30 – Lunch at café. 17:00 – Returns to office. 20:30 – Home.

Professional disgrace — a prior incident connected to his medical practice was covered up by Brás Cubas, creating both debt and resentment.

His medical records dialogue branch (accessible after finding the study document) directly relates to the Means chain. His alibi is undermined by the dawn garden testimony.

The victim's estranged nephew, cut from the will years prior. He arrived in Rio shortly before the murder — his timing alone makes him an obvious suspect, which is exactly what the game wants you to think.

10:00 – Port District arrival (appears mid-morning). 12:00 – Wandering between locations. 14:00 – Café. 17:00 – Back at port. 21:00 – Unknown.

Inheritance — the most obvious motive in the game. His surface-level evidence is plentiful, which makes him the game's primary red herring.

His second-tier dialogue (unlocked after knowing about the will document) reveals that his relationship with the murder is more complex than initial appearances suggest.

Long-serving housekeeper who knows every room, routine, and secret in the Cubas household. Her loyalty was absolute — until recently.

07:00 – Main house interior (all morning). 12:00 – Kitchen. 14:00 – Garden. 16:30 – Back inside. 19:00 – Evening rounds of the house.

Loyalty betrayed — she witnessed something she was never meant to see, and has been living with that knowledge. Her motive is emotional rather than financial.

Her kitchen dialogue (12:00) is the most candid window. Evening rounds (19:00) produce a unique testimony branch about the victim's last hours.

Local parish priest with a long spiritual relationship with Brás Cubas — and, more importantly, knowledge of confessions that could destroy multiple suspects' alibis.

07:00 – Church (accessible all morning). 11:00 – House call to Cubas estate. 14:00 – Back at church. 18:00 – Evening prayer. 20:00 – Unavailable.

Moral — he is protecting a secret confessed to him. His complicity is passive rather than active, but it constitutes a direct obstruction of the investigation.

He will never directly contradict his confessional duty, but his refusals and deflections are themselves evidence. Track which topics he refuses across multiple loops.

A minor political associate of the victim with an inflated sense of his own importance and a volcanic temper. His anger is easily provoked — which is useful for the Black Eye achievement and for extracting unguarded information.

09:00 – Main house. 11:30 – Café. 13:30 – Port area. 16:00 – Returns. 18:30 – Leaves property.

Political embarrassment — Brás Cubas had material that could expose Henrique's corrupt dealings. His motive is self-preservation.

Aggressive dialogue options (available from Loop 1) trigger his unguarded responses. The Black Eye achievement requires the most aggressive option in his 09:00 morning window.

A young artist renting a studio on the estate grounds. She observes everything and volunteers nothing. Her vantage point gives her unique sight-lines on events others claim not to have witnessed.

07:00 – Studio (all morning, do not disturb until she exits). 11:30 – Garden walk. 13:00 – Café. 16:00 – Studio again. 21:00 – Evening walk (rare accessibility window).

Witness protection — she saw something and has been threatened into silence. Her motive for concealment is fear, not guilt.

Her 21:00 evening walk is an extremely rare accessibility window where her fear drops and she becomes candid. This is the most information-dense conversation in the game if you reach her then.

A retired military officer and oldest friend of the Cubas family. His age grants him unusual candour — he will tell you things others guard, but his memory is selective.

08:00 – Veranda (morning only, leaves by 10:30). 12:30 – Café. 15:00 – Long afternoon rest (inaccessible). 18:00 – Returns for evening drinks.

He is covering for someone — a person he has known for decades and whose guilt he suspects but cannot bring himself to report.

His veranda morning window (08:00–10:30) is the best conversation window. His evening drinks (18:00) add a softer, more melancholy layer — he knows more than he says.

A glamorous socialite with a direct financial stake in the victim's estate through a disputed bequest. She presents a polished exterior that hides systematic deception.

10:00 – Main house (late arrival). 12:15 – Café (present at the private meeting window). 14:30 – Garden. 17:00 – Main house. 21:30 – Departs entirely.

Financial — her bequest is challenged by the same will provision that affects Marie Grant. Their financial interests are directly in competition.

She is one of the two participants in the 12:15–12:45 café private meeting. Her post-meeting dialogue (13:00+) is dramatically different from her pre-meeting composure.

The Cubas family lawyer who administered the contested will. He is the only character who fully understands the financial implications of the murder — and the one with the most to gain from confusion.

09:00 – Legal office (off-estate, accessible location). 11:00 – Estate visit. 14:00 – Café meeting (with specific character, not the 12:15 window). 17:30 – Office. 19:30 – Home.

Professional and financial — as estate administrator, the will dispute's resolution direction dramatically affects his income. He has been steering the dispute deliberately.

His legal office dialogue (09:00) requires prior knowledge of the will document to access the second tier. His 14:00 café meeting is with a character whose connection to him is the secondary conspirator revelation.

A kitchen worker who moves invisibly through the household. She is universally underestimated by the other suspects — and by many players — which makes her the game's most reliable independent witness.

07:00 – Kitchen (all morning). 12:30 – Serving lunch at café. 15:00 – Back at estate. 18:00 – Evening service. 21:00 – Departs.

None personal — but she has witnessed events that directly contradict three suspects' alibis. Her testimony is the most credible in the game precisely because she has no stake in the outcome.

She will not volunteer information. Every testimony node from Zeferina requires a specific question prompt that is only unlocked after collecting the relevant contradiction from another character first.
