๐ญ How Endings Work
Endings in The Posthumous Investigation are determined entirely by the accusation you make on the Thinking Board โ specifically, who you accuse and which evidence chain you use to support the accusation. There is no branching dialogue path to endings, no moral choice system, and no relationship meter. The only variable is the logical quality and content of your final board submission.
There are three meaningfully distinct outcome categories: the Standard Ending (correct suspect, standard evidence chain), the True Ending (correct suspect, complete evidence chain including hidden evidence), and various Wrong Accusation outcomes (wrong suspect or incomplete chain). Each ending has associated achievements.
๐ Standard Ending
The Standard Ending is reached by correctly identifying the murderer and submitting a logically complete three-chain accusation (Motive + Means + Opportunity) using the most accessible evidence for each chain. This ending resolves the murder mystery but leaves several secondary plot threads โ particularly around the victim's past and the broader social corruption the game implies โ unaddressed.
The Standard Ending provides narrative closure for the direct murder investigation and is considered a satisfying completion by most players. Brรกs Cubas's closing monologue in this ending references his literary original โ a darkly comic acknowledgment that even from beyond the grave, truth is rarely simple.
Standard Ending Requirements
- Correct suspect identified via Thinking Board accusation
- Motive chain: minimum 2 nodes, at least 1 Evidence node
- Means chain: minimum 2 nodes, at least 1 physical Evidence node
- Opportunity chain: minimum 3 nodes including alibi contradiction
- No requirement for hidden evidence or secret location clues
โญ True Ending
The True Ending reveals the full scope of the conspiracy around Brรกs Cubas's death โ including the complicity of characters who appear peripheral throughout the investigation. It requires gathering a set of evidence that most players never find, including at least one clue from the hard-to-access Port District evening window and the hidden document in the late-morning study visit.
This ending reframes several earlier scenes with new meaning and delivers the game's sharpest literary commentary on class, inheritance, and the corruption of 1930s Brazilian society. The closing sequence is significantly extended compared to the Standard Ending.
True Ending Additional Requirements
Visit the Port District after 18:00. A physical object accessible only in this evening window generates an Evidence node that forms part of the extended Means chain required for the True Ending.
Return to Brรกs Cubas's study after 10:00 (not at game start). A drawer previously blocked by a specific character now yields a financial document connecting two suspects' motives.
Be at the cafรฉ between 12:15 and 12:45 to overhear a private exchange between two suspects. This testimony is required for the extended Motive chain in the True Ending.
The True Ending requires acknowledging a secondary conspirator on the Thinking Board โ a character not typically included in standard evidence chains. This character's connection must be explicitly made before submitting the accusation.
โ Wrong Accusation Outcomes
Accusing the wrong suspect โ or submitting an incomplete chain for the correct suspect โ ends the loop immediately. Wrong accusation outcomes have three sub-types:
The most common outcome. Your chain is logically deficient โ usually missing the alibi contradiction or relying on uncorroborated testimony. The game rejects the submission without narrative consequence. Loop resets. No achievement.
You accuse a suspect who has a plausible surface-level motive but no complete chain. The game accepts the submission but delivers a brief 'insufficient evidence' outcome. Tied to at least one achievement. Loop resets.
You successfully build a three-chain accusation against a suspect who is not the true murderer. This triggers a 'false conviction' narrative sequence โ one of the game's most thematically interesting outcomes, commenting on the justice system. Tied to an achievement. Loop resets after the sequence.

โ Endings FAQ
Can I get the True Ending on my first playthrough?
Technically yes, if you happen to visit all the required locations in the correct time windows by chance. In practice, the Port District evening window and the late-morning study are both easily missed โ most players reach the Standard Ending first and the True Ending on a subsequent run with this guide.
Does the True Ending change who the murderer is?
No. The identity of the primary murderer is the same in both endings. The True Ending adds a secondary conspirator and significantly deepens the thematic context, but the core accusation targets the same character.
What happens after the True Ending โ is there post-game content?
After the True Ending, the game returns to the main menu. There is no post-game chapter or epilogue gameplay. All remaining achievements can still be collected via new loops from the main menu.
Is the 'False Conviction' sequence skippable?
Yes. After the wrong-accusation narrative sequence plays, you are given the option to skip the remainder and return directly to the loop start. The achievement unlocks whether you watch the full sequence or skip it.
